“Harassment” is a word commonly used in our culture. But, what does it really mean in a legal context? Bow do you know when behavior crosses the line from annoying to truly harassing?
Acceding to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, “Harassment is unwelcome conduct that is based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, and/or age. Harassment becomes unlawful where 1) enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment, or 2) the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive”.
Many employees are fearful that filing a harassment complaint will lead to retaliation from their employer. This is also against the law.
