High Speed Chasers Can’t Sue

Speeding is the cause of many accidental injuries. High speed chases take speeding to an extreme. Many lives are tragically impacted in seconds.

CNN’s Bill Means’ reports of one Goergia teenager, Victor Harris, who led police on a high speed chase. Harris, 19 at the time, said he tried to evade police because he feared having his car impounded.

Harris sustained life-altering injuries after impact with a police car sent his car airborne, over an embankment. Mr. Harris, now 26, is a quadriplegic and lives in an assisted living facility.

Harris’ representatives filed suit against the police. It was escalated to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court decided the police cannot be held liable for a car chase suspect’s injuries. One dissenting justice, John Paul Stevens, felt his colleagues were overly influenced by video tape evidence as opposed to other facts relevant to the case.
